I know there are a lot of different recipes that use something that may seem a little out of place in the recipe, but it's purpose is to be a binding agent for the particular dish.
I am making volcano potatoes because my dd loves volcanoes. She is a picky eater though, but she REALLY LOVES mashed potatoes. She loves cheese. She loves volcanoes.
So in an American Girl Molly cookbook, the potatoes are just like any of your standard mashed potato recipes. Except, when you blend in the butter, milk and salt, you also add two egg yolks. Then you from them into a mountain shape, scoop out some of the top and put shredded cheese in the hole. You bake them in the oven at 350 until the cheese is melted. To me, the egg yolks sound kind of *gag*, but it's probably used to get the mashed potatoes to stand up. You end with mashed potatoes that look like volcanoes.
So, what's your thoughts on the egg yolks? Okay, gross, or

Sounds different. But cooked so doesn't sound "gross" to me. I'd probably give it a try.

It sounds right. The only other thing would be to search some other recipes and see what they use

Sounds different. But cooked so doesn't sound "gross" to me. I'd probably give it a try. I know that when I do hamburger/shepherds pie, you cook that until cheese on top melts, and the only part that gets a crust is a very thin layer on the top, all the rest under it is a mashed potato consistency.
I'm gonna give it a whirl, and support her playing with her food that night. LoL!! I know some things used as a binding ingredient aren't really noticed when they are cooked into something.
Btw, I thought of you and yakky when I was at an RV show the other day. There was a place in Yakima handing out pamphlets to their RV park. I am not much of a whine drinker, so I will have to take a look at the whole deal and see what they have for dogs and kids and families.

The egg just makes it cook together. You can totally just use whites for that if the yolk part grosses you out.

The egg in it would be disconcerting to me too. If it were going to bake for a good while, so that I knew that the egg would cook, I'd be okay with it. Wonder if you could use some ricotta cheese or something, in lieu of the egg. ?? (Although, I think that we're probably not normal though b/c I think that most folks wouldn't think much about the egg in it. ).
