Wow! A FB friend had commented on making pimento cheese spread and I had never heard of it before. Sounded interesting.
Surprised to see it at our little Mom/Pop grocery store this morning - marked "homemade". Boy is it ever good on my gluten free crackers!

Oh wow, I can't imagine not hearing of pimento cheese before either.
Good thing that your first taste was a good brand, b/c you might have decided that you didn't like it, if you would have gotten some brands. They're not all made equal.
I like it okay, but I'm not a big fan of red peppers, so I like it to be less pimento'y, and less mayo'y (don't like mayo either).
I've made it myself a couple of times.
I had it grilled at our deli a few months back. If you like it, you might try that for a warmer meal (wintertime vs. summertime).

I'm surprised that you hadn't heard of pimento cheese spread, either! We make it in the deli where I work. I was a huge fan as a shopper years and years before I started working there. Now I know how to make it.

Is it a southern thing?

I don't know. I live in Kentucky, but I'm too close to Cincinnati to be considered Southern. Kroger stores across the river (meaning in Ohio) carry Price's pimento spread and they make their own version.

I don't think so. (?) I grew up in Pennsylvania, and I knew about it growing up.
But then on the other hand, my parents were military retirees, and they picked up a lot of food strangeness throughout their years of multiple duty stations around the world.

I'm southern and it has always been a part of my life. I don't know that it is actually southern though.

all you ever needed to know about pimento cheeseI had to look it up. It's a long article. The gist of it is - it started in New York then later because Georgia had such a great pimento crop that they started making in from scratch. There is our lesson on pimento cheese spread for the day.
