Calling all campers.... Tell me what your meals are when you're camping out.
Camping season is upon us and I'm oh, so tired of hot dogs, hamburgers, plain ole' chicken on the grill. I need something new!

Do you have any of those camping cookers (by mom2riandkayl) that make a grilled cheese type sandwich over a fire?
They sell them most places that sell camping gear.
We love to use those and make all sorts of combinations. Everyone's favorite seems to be pizza. And then of course desserts. (Oh, man... now I'm really hungry for one made with chocolate pudding in it!!! )
I'll try to think of some other meals that we cooked. We always had the most fun with breakfast. Our other meals tended to be as you said... meat cooked over the grill.

Another easy thing (by mom2riandkayl) that kids enjoy...
Foil packets. Throw a hamburger patty or a b/s chicken breast on a piece of foil and then put whatever cut up veggies you like in there too. Fold the foil up and cook it for a good long time over the fire/grill. Yum!

Look what Family Fun just emailed me.... (by EllieFunt) familyfun.go.com/recipes/kids...7_famf76smore/I do make the foil packets. I'm just bored with the same ole stuff! Thanks for the ideas. I don't have one of those cookers. I may have to get a couple. My girls will fight if they don't both have one. My little one might not have the strength to hold it up though!

oooo, I like this subject (by morgNmacy) We do PoorMans Stew - you can put whatever you like/have in it. A lot of times we use hamburger, beans, and every seasoning I can get my hands on. You can do potatoes instead of beans - do both if you want!
We love the Foil Packet meals. Or, even just potatos with onion, garlic, butter and maybe cheese.
Kabobs?
I like to have Coney Sauce for the hot dogs. That way all the dogs get eaten.
We always take bunches and bunches of fruit, too.
Other than that, burgers and hotdogs and smores (of course) are camping ..... and don't forget the chicken!

Oh! Camping is GREAT, inexpensive fun. (by ddofEve) IF YOU ARE ALL SET UP, THAT IS.
To get set up, you need to be careful.
I think the most expensive things you need to buy are your Lodgings and your cooler(s).
We bought a giant tent last year. If I had it to do over, I'd get two smaller ones. One for us, one for our boys, although, maybe not. We have it now, anyway. And we've used it twice.
Now, we have a hard-sided pop-up camper, my fil bought for us. The inside is pristine. Get some paper plates, bring your bedding and clothing, and you're set! SO long as its not cold, although, it does have a heater in it!
We camp for $15/night here.
Robin, is there any way you could borrow someone's stuff and do a trial-run in the back yard or somthing? Like, try before you buy type thing? Camping isn't for everyone, and I think that you just need to make sure before you invest. 'Cause, it IS an investment.
As far as cooking utensils, I have a black cast iron skillet I take no matter where we go or who we go with, you can stick that puppy right into the fire, and have a bake.
Then there's the grill. Just the part you put your food onto. THe campfire serves as the heat for most everything.
We do roasted corn in their husks. Just peel one layer off the corn, trim the hair, and soak it in cold water for at the very least, an hour. Then put it on the grill husks and all! for another hour. It will get nice and dark on the outside. Cool it for a few minutes, peel, and spread with butter and salt. YUM!
Also, to find alternatives to hot dogs, I have made Greek sauce to put on them, or We have cooked bacon chunks on skewers, Kielbasa, steaks, basically whatever you can want to eat. If I want to do spaghetti, preboil the noodles, and get the sauce really nice and hot in your cast iron skillet. You could portion cook it too, adding noodles in to get them hot. Or get a pot of hot water boiling over the fire and dunk the noddles for a min or two. Spaghetti! Do boneless "Buffalo chicken wings" on the grill.
THe trick is to get as much done ahead of time, and place the stuff in bowls with covers or ziplocks into the cooler. Pre cut your celery and carrots to eat with the boneless wings, put them into a baggie with water, and don't forget your sauce! I'd reccommend a covered sealed dish for this, as you will need to shake the chicken pieces inside to cover with sauce.
You really can eat whatever you want whenever you want. We basically eat out a ton, as we're camping mainly to save $ on hotel rooms. And to be honest, its nt a vacation for mommy, if I have to figure out how to do all this stuff on my own. With 3 small children, we eat out!
