the one that barked all. the. time. He died today. He was probably at least 14 so it wasn't unexpected. Really, that was one of the reasons I didn't even want to take him because I knew he wouldn't be around long because he was so old and then the kids would be attached to him. Anyway, he is gone now and we've had a quiet (the first in so very, very long) evening without the barking (he really did bark all of the time & he woke up early & went to sleep late at night). Dh hasn't called his mom yet, I don't think. She'll probably take it pretty bad.

The quiet must be a relief... But attached kids and telling inlaws.... Praying for all of you as you deal with this.

Rather bittersweet then, isn't it? I'm glad you were able to give this dog a loving home for its last days, but I also understand the sense of relief you must feel.

I feel so bad for feeling relieved but you have no idea what constant barking will do to your nerves. I didn't realize how much he barked and how on edge it kept me until we got to get away from home for a little while and I didn't always have the barking in the background. The kids have done fine with it today. We lost our dog last year and they were all so upset for awhile but this time it hasn't been as bad. I do think we did a decent job of explaining with him that he was already very old and probably wouldn't live very long. We still have the IL's other dog but she is younger (about 6 years old maybe a little older) and is a really good dog. We are down to 2 dogs and that is our self imposed limit (feeding 3 dogs was getting expensive)!

I'm sorry for your inlaws, but don't feel badly about being relieved. The poor thing probably lived in a constant state of anxiety. (I think I might have been tempted to feed him a little benedryl to get him to sleep longer or something )
