Brock's symptoms started with chest congestion and he was diagnosed with influenza A the Monday before Christmas. He took Tamiflu and seem to kick it pretty quickly - the fever, etc. Brody was diagnosed with influenza B last Friday - but exhibited symptoms starting Wed. This weekend, maybe Saturday, Brock started feeling bad again - head congestion/chest congestion, so I gave him mucinex. Now he is coughing quite a bit - had a hard time going to sleep last night and slept in the chair. I'm not sure if the mucinex is causing the coughing - if so that's a good thing to get rid of the congestion. He has no fever and he isn't exhibiting any difficulty breathing or anything like that. He says he doesn't feel really bad -just has an annoying cough and the congestion. But he is my stoic child. He can be practically dying and he says he's fine. I do wonder if Brock caught Brody's Influenza B - wouldn't that be a kicker to have both A and B right after each other? After Brody had pneumonia last spring, I guess I'm a tad bit paranoid. I hate to bring him to the doctor though if they are just going to say he has a virus and has to wait it out, plus who knows what else you will catch at the doctor's office this time of year? Doctor or no doctor? We are coming up on a weekend so I probably need to decide if I should call first thing in the morning. Of course, HE has no desire to go. :hmm:

sounds like he had difficulty sleeping, or getting to sleep, because of the cough?
my daughter had a bad case of pneumonia (twice) when she was younger, and it's scary because they are vulnerable to having it again.
i think in the absence of a fever, i would wait it out. but i would also pay attention to his energy level. being tired & requiring a lot of rest to get better is different than lethargy.

This. Around here and the neighboring state/country, there is a cold with cough going around that is horrible and lasts for 2-3 weeks. But that's all it is. Without fever and no other things going on besides the congestion, I'd wait. I know it's hard to do that when it's Friday so the only thing you can do on the weekend is go to the ER. I hate sick kids on a Friday.

I would wait, but then again, I never take them (even when they should go). I'm probably not a good one to ask.
With no fever and feeling 'ok'... I think I'd wait. Even with pneumonia, there are some that are just viral pneumonias. Not that you want to mess with pneumonia (and I'm pretty sure they give antibiotics even if they aren't sure if it's viral or bacterial)... but what I'm saying is that he can fight it on his own.
Josh has had sinus issues, cold and cough since the week before Christmas. I haven't taken him in... yet. Yeah. I'm probably not the right one to ask.

I decided not to take him in. He is not acting like Brody did when he had pneumonia at all. Brody slept like ALL the time and could hardly stay awake. He was just SO sick. In the absence of a fever, I'm going to wait it out. I don't like to give Brock antibiotics if he doesn't need them because they really bother his stomach which causes other issues! I did get some mucinex that is just an expectorant and I will probably make him inhale some ginger steam to help clear that congestion out. I'm not sure if he caught a cold or if this is just the lingering effects of the original influenza A he had. I suppose time will take care of it. I know I'm still not at 100% energy-wise. I feel pretty good in the mornings, but by after lunch if I am busy, I need to lay down for a little while. I suppose it just takes time to recover. We are all so used to things being instant.

Do you use probiotics? It makes a huge difference in avoiding the intestinal side effects of antibiotics.
