Thanksgiving sort of snuck up on me this year, but I am kind of prepared now.
We usually get together with DH's extended family, which we will be doing again this year. I asked my dad what he wanted to do and made sure he knew that we were totally willing to do something different this year if he wanted, but he wanted us to continue with our normal plans. He knows this is when DH's sister and her family are usually here. He also knew that he was totally welcome to join us with DH's family, but he didn't really want to spend the day with a bunch of young kids. In the end, he decided to visit my brother and his wife in Montana for a few days. I'm really glad he is doing that, especially now while the weather is still fairly mild. But it is also a 2-day drive and this is the first time he is doing that by himself. He left today and will be back in a week. If you could pray for both his safety and also that God will comfort him on this trip that will probably be full of memories.
It is kind of strange in some ways. We haven't done "Thanksgiving" with my family in about 10 years. That is not a problem for me or something I regret at all - my family has had unconventional holiday celebrations and celebration times for much of my life. In the years we lived near each other, we were together frequently and in the years we lived a distance apart we were often together within a 3 weeks or so before and after Thanksgiving. Not being together on the day itself never mattered to any of us. But that is also what makes this year kind of strange. Thanksgiving day itself will go on as it has before, without evident change, even though there has been great change for me. I'm not sure if I like this or not. Christmas will be different though - sometimes on the actual holiday, sometimes just close to it, we ALWAYS had a Christmas celebration with my parents. We will this year too - it will just be different.
Anyway, back to my Thanksgiving prep. We will celebrate at my aunt-in-law's house, but I like to get my house clean before then too - both for myself before we put up Christmas stuff and also because my SIL and her family will be here at some point over the weekend too. I got my carpet's cleaned this morning. I am still decluttering the playroom a bit. I still need to get out our cider press and bleach it so we can take it to Thanksgiving and make cider and I still need to make rolls for Thanksgiving. I finally feel like I'm about ready for this week to be here.
What are you doing for Thanksgiving? How is your prep going?

Sending up prayers for safe travels for your dad and that the Lord will bless him and comfort him over the days ahead while he is away from home. I'm praying for you too Shannon that the Lord with strengthen you and give you peace over Thanksgiving and as we go into the Christmas season. I know it is a hard time for many of those who have lost loved ones. Sending lots of love and hugs your way! ❤️ Oh and I think it's so fun you'll be making fresh cider for Thanksgiving. Is that a tradition for your family?

MIL is going Thanksgiving as usual BUT it will be the last holiday in the family home. She is moving to a twin home in December. DH's family is.......unique. Luckily OUR kids know how to behave appropriately and be kind to people they really dislike (for good cause). We arrive at 11, eat at 12. Dinner is over by 12:30. Then we sit and stare at each other for another hour or two. Sigh.
We'll bop over to my sister's house for a little afternoon visit. THAT is where we would prefer to be all day but TRADITION.
It will be interesting to see what traditions change after MIL's move. I don't have to worry about doing holidays because we live a whole 50 minutes away and everyone doesn't want to drive all the way to our house. Of course, we drive all the way to their town. Logic is missing.

Cider is kind of an old and kind of a new tradition. My family did cider making when I was a kid but it was not a Thanksgiving thing. We have done it several times with our kids as well but not for Thanksgiving. We took our press to DH's family Thanksgiving for the first times last year - lots of fun! So we are doing it again this year.

Logic is missing. That doesn't sound fun - at least the first part. Praying that tradition will go okay and that you can then relax and enjoy the time at your sister's house. Also praying that traditions can change to something more enjoyable after your MIL's move. Hugs!

That's so neat! I'm sure it'll be a fond childhood memory for your kids when they've grown up!
