My youngest son keeps complaining of chest pain. We took him to the pediatrician in June and he had an EKG which was normal. He said sometimes his left arm hurts and his chest sometimes hurts. He said it feels like it's a little hard to take a deep breath and sometimes, it feels constricting.
HE plays sports and it never bothers him when he is going all out, but only when he is sitting around. He, of course, has googled it and is worried about it. I'm going to take him back to the pediatrician, but I have no idea what to ask for - maybe a CT scan or MRI. He said it started out as a pain in his ribs and has gradually worked up to his chest now. I"m stumped. Help!!

No help really. But praying for wisdom and peace for him and you.

My son had similar issues when he was a senior in high school. We went to a bunch of doctors who all assured him that his heart was fine. It turned out to be anxiety. Is that a possibility or do you think that it is something physical?

Could it be related to what was going on with him a few years ago?? PANDAS wasn't it??

First thought is anxiety
Second thought is costochondritis. I have had it a few times. I had an entire cardiac workup as well as a bone scan. I felt like I was having a heart attack. It's the cartilage around the sternum that is inflamed . It is very close to the heart area , so it gives the impression of actual heart pain.

Thank you all. I did wonder if it might be anxiety or something related to that. I know he has chemistry and pre-calc, and is finding that to be very challenging, plus all the other stuff he does. He also has had issues in the past that would match up to costachondritis. Honestly, he tends to be a bit of a hypochondriac (I can be the same way - is that headache really a brain bleed???). Maybe it comes with a creative temperament?? But it was MUCH better this summer, so maybe the anxiety part is correct. I don't want to blow him off, but I also don't want to spend thousands of dollars (our insurance stinks so it would be all out of pocket), to find out he is anxious. My dh needs hernia surgery as well, so I'm thinking of that, too. Anyway, all kinds of things were going through my head - blood clots or something pulmonary; bone cancer; some weird heart thing (my husband has cardiomyopathy so he's been checked for that when he was younger). I just didn't want to blow him off and then find out later it was something serious, so this makes me feel a bit better. Not that I will blow him off, but at least I don't feel quite so urgent about it!

For years I thought I had allergies....turns out it was asthma.....could he have undiagnosed asthma ? something to look into take him to a cardiologist anyway......just to be sure .... He plays 3 sports that involve a ton of running. I would think he'd have found out before now. Just an update - we went to the doctor. He's getting an echo next week just to be safe, but she feels it is probably all of his digestive/stomach issues. He's on an acid blocker and we'll see if that helps. Thanks for asking about him!
