Anyone here have personal experience, or with extended family?
DS graduates high school this year.
He's been talking about the Navy for a couple of yrs. now.
He goes back & forth about it.
Thought he wanted to study computer engineering in college, then this year decided that he wants electrical engineering.
He'd love to attend one of our state schools but it's pricey.
There's also a private college he has his eye on.
He hasn't been terribly super motivated, though.
Hasn't even applied to college yet.
I get that ..... I think a part of him is really tired of "doing school."
We told him that if he will attend the local univ. here for all his pre-req's, we will foot the bill for everything.
Then when he transfers for his major, he'd have to help out with the cost since R&B is at least $10,000 .... off campus a bit cheaper but not really much.
If I continue working, he'll be ok with $$$ but would probably need to borrow a modest amount.
This is my tighter-than-bark-on-a-tree kid.
The thought of paying for college is unappealing to him ... that is, if it's his $$. ha!
So, we had his recruitment for the Navy mtg. this week.
DH & I were impressed.
DH wanted to join the military when he was younger but his dad discouraged it.
I think DS really wants the military but he's also conflicted since he'll go away for a LONG time ... yet he's excited to explore.
I think he's very tired of school & going into the Navy would give him a lot of good exposure to working & then going to school.
He likes the $$ idea of the military.
On the other hand, he could do college the traditional way .....
Not sure how this will turn out.
Anyone have an experience to share?
The recruiter is excited for him to join (of course). DS' test scores are high ... which is a good sign.
He COULD get selected to be in the Navy & attend a great college at the same time, although it's super competitive.
We'll be looking into this, too.
