This is what is currently over the windows in the corner of my kitchen. I like my green curtains. Its what I wanted after we moved in and my mom's friend made them for me. I would prefer nothing behind them but it doesn't work because of the way the sun comes in the window on the left side of the photo in the afternoon/evening. I tried putting the sheer curtain behind both windows, but it doesn't work on the left window because it lets in too much light still (its ok to me but drives my DH crazy.) Then I tried a simple shade in the left window - a fairly cheap one. But the cat sits in that window a lot, and at one point he went bug hunting and ripped a slice down the center of the shade. So now the shade needs to be replaced. But I'm not sure I want to replace it with another shade - for various reasons, including the cat. Regular blinds are an absolute NO. I hate them. There were blinds in both windows when we moved in. They were on the cheap end, which is fixable. But I HATE cleaning blinds. I have removed all blinds from my house over the 5 years we have been here. So, what can I do? I need to block out afternoon sun glare, preferably without making the room too dark. I either need something that will compliment the other window with sheer curtain (right side of photo) or I will need to replace it too (something to compliment it would be preferable just because then I only need to spend money on one thing. I need something that will not look out of place behind my green curtains. I need something that is NOT difficult to clean blinds. My kitchen is mostly white with blue trim on/above the counters. Any ideas???

I love the curtain color and your cozy corner! Looks inviting! I was going to suggest a shade that may filter light.. but the cat is not going to appreciate that. I know you hate blinds, but they have smaller vertical blinds for windows. Would that work? or small interior shutters for those 2 windows. Not sure how costly and work intensive that would be though...

I love it-it does look cozy. I hate mini blinds,too.... .Those wooden shutters cshore suggested are really nice!!! Or maybe an opaque sheer? Or,they have a film you can put on the windows, too.

Thank you for those ideas. I didn't even know about the shutters or film possibilities - I will definitely be checking them out. I hadn't thought of vertical blinds. They're not my favorite but they might work well here.

I was going to suggest vertical blinds but since you don't like those, maybe you don't want that.
Shutters are very nice! But you might not want that either.
I get the feeling that you really like your curtains ... you just want to minimize the glare & sunshine when it's at it's brightest. I get that.
I cannot tell if your curtains are lined. It's looking like they may not be.
This is what I would do .... but I sew. JoAnn's & Hobby Lobby often have a 50% off decorator fabric sale. At holiday time they offer 15% on top of that, or sometimes more. Knowing that you like curtains, I'd put a traverse rod on the windows & I would buy opaque sheers (JC Penney), and I'd either buy (or make) 63" draperies to go over those sheers. The decorator fabric is heavy & gives a nice hanging look, and it can also be lined. The traverse rod will allow you to open the curtains either to one side, or pull them apart in the middle. That way you can have them open or closed. And the same with the sheer curtain which would fit behind. JC Penney does offer good sales; you might find something you like without having to have something made.
Sorry ... I just don't think you're going to solve your problem with what you have.
I love your two windows. If this were my room, I'd have the curtains open to one side. So on the left window, have them open to the left, and on the right window, have them open to the right.
Cute room BTW. :-)

They are not lined. If I had realized the glare would be such an issue, I would have done things a little differently originally. Oh well. Definitely things to think about here. Thanks!

Plant a tree outside that window ! Pick coordinating fabric - make a lining and add a layer to your curtains so it covers the open gap make a matching table runner out of the coordinating fabric. cute area.
