So we're making some fun (good) changes to our house!
New kitchen. Such a blast. Kinda chaotic, but exciting.
As we've been shopping for lighting, we've gotten some outside lighting too.
Now consider the front of our house. We live in a BASIC large rectangle ranch style house. No frills, but it's attractive as it sits on a pretty 3.5 acre apple orchard (well it was originally an apple orchard).
DH doesn't like the outdoor light that is @ the front door. He's been known to hit his head on it. It isn't large, it just doesn't belong in the spot that it is in, although that IS where it was installed (not by us).
So .... picture this.
I think our house is about 80' long (or wide). 2 car Garage is on left side. Then a little 6-8" between the garage and the front door. This is where the outdoor light is hung. Between the door and the picture window .... oh it has to be at least 60". I suggest moving the light (& buying a new, larger lantern style) there. While the storm door would open "into it" we never extend the door that far. In fact, I don't think it would even extend back that far.
If we do that, we have a "hole" where we remove the original light. DH can patch it, but it will look patched. We have old aluminum siding so it isn't as though we could replace the one piece of siding.
The light also would be on the side of the house where the lights are not normally hung. I'm trying to find examples on Pinterest or Google Image but can't find anything.
Can you help?
What do you think? Thanks!

A patch would be more practical at my house. But then I also have a 5 yo and 7 yo. We also get pretty windy so I wouldn't want to take the chance of the wind whipping the door into the light.
Not sure with your situation...I know you've talked about moving periodically. What would be best if you decide to sell?

We have actually decided that we are NOT selling.
We're adding some significant expense to the house .... new kitchen, new bath. We re-did the living room. The hall flooring & built in shelving is new within the last few yrs. We're onto some outdoor stuff in the back with the deck & lighting & plumbing out there once the weather breaks. This summer DH says he wants the house re-wired. Oh, we put a roof on last year. Replaced all our exterior doors (& interior within the last few yrs). Painted the exterior of our house. DH was a painter for years, but when it came to painting our home, he hired it out!! He was tired & done with painting. LOL I told DH that we are NOT moving after all of this .... at least not for a LONG while. He never looks at houses (for moving); I do.
All is well. With these changes, I actually WANT to be here. :-)

I guess in that case, I would go with what you like the best. It doesn't have to be practical for little kids and it doesn't have to be the best for selling so if no one minds the door/light issue then that seems like it would work fine.
I was thinking about the possibility of small kids in grandkids in the future (since you are not planning to move.) But if the door can hit the light still at that point, I'd just fix it when little kids are there by putting a cinder block or something in behind the door to stop it before it hits the light.

Thanks!
Our door doesn't actually open enough that it would swing BACK & hit the light. It swings out to about 90 degrees and that's it.

How exciting and fun to do all those renos!!! Would one of those large metal stars cover the hole in the siding? I have seen those stars on ranchers before and they look so cute. Not sure if that would suit your style/taste though??

When we remodeled we exchanged old , dated light fixtures......with what some say is only outdoor, cheap, galvanized steel lights.....like at a crab shack, or a barn. I put them in my kitchen and bathroom.....and Everyone loves them. They might have been the cheapest thing at lowes.

The Star will not fit. There just isn't enough room. I think we'd have to have a "patch." At least it would be painted to match the house.
Yes, all this work .... we are staying. It's not really ALL that much work ... I mean, it is, but it's not a full house remodel. Dh first replaced the hallway flooring (to wood). In the living room we replaced the carpeting with wood flooring. We painted and changed out all the trim. We hung a big screen tv, and we painted the fireplace. Oh, and we replaced the front door. Now that the room is finished, I think I'd like to replace the picture window. Maaaaybe.....
Now the kitchen, THAT is a full remodel. I'm feeling depressed today. It's taking forever bc dh insists on doing the work himself.
We did replace all our exterior doors. That's been kinda fun.
Once the kitchen is finished we'll repaint the breezeway and put new carpeting in. It's just a narrow room that parallels our garage.
Ds got a new bedroom a couple of yrs. ago .... new paint, trim & carpeting.
Anyway ..... once I figure out what to do about that light fixture AND I can figure out how to post photos ... I'll do that. If you're my FB friend, I do put kitchen photos on there.
