I'm not techy and the kid I'm buying for is not techy so that should be easy enough, right? Little dd is getting a laptop for Christmas. It'll basically only be used for math (cd based program), writing and pictures. No internet, no gaming & no streaming. I just want a fairly basic laptop, pretty cheap (less than $300 would be great and less than $200 would be even better) because I always have the kids I need to be able to buy it online (looking at walmart now). The only real requirement I have is that it must have a cd/dvd drive. I know there are options that I could buy and have an external drive but for this kid internal would definitely be better (the least amount of things she can lose is always better).
Why is it so difficult??

You mentioned that writing will be one main use - will you also be getting Microsoft Office? Do you particularly want it to be not online, or do you just not *need* it to go online? I ask because if you're okay with going online, Google Docs will work for the writing part. I would suggest a Chromebook but as far as I can tell they don't generally come with CD/DVD drives. Do you want suggestions, or are you just venting?

HP makes a few on their site with drives installed...but I can't promote them...they don't have an INTEL processor and since that pays my bills and food I can't recommend a competitor's processor

Internal drives are starting to seem like a thing from the past. My girlfriend got a refurbished laptop from eBay last year. Hasn't had any problems with it.

I ended up going with an HP. It was the only one under $300 with a drive out of about 15 that I looked at.
