We just returned from Boston - ---walked the Freedom Trail (saw 22 landmarks, the paper said 2.5 miles, we somehow stayed on the path and did 9 miles)....extra feet going in and touring sites.
We loved, and I mean LOVED the Boston Tea Party Museum. It was expensive....but so worth the price. It was a bit of play acting, then touring the ship, throwing tea overboard, then inside the museum with some wonderful art on the walls, videos, more speeches.
We used to go to the Chicago Museums....Science and Industry, Field Museum, ....Science and Industry needs a cleaning staff....I was grossed out last time I was there....and Field Museum took out the large dinosaurs I remember from the 70s, 80s, 90s,....and was not very interesting

Gettysburg is a vistors center but has a show to view, art, and a museum. Very educational and very well done
Smithsonians...well mainly the Air & Space and the American History and the Natural History ones
The MET (in NYC) got to love the fabulous works of art. and the MOMA to appease the modern art fans too.
I also like the Air & Space Museum in San Diego and the USS Midway
We also enjoyed the Children's Museum in Indy that was huge and we could have spend more than the half day we had time for there.

Field Museum is still my favorite. They have a new-ish dinosaur exhibit. Maybe you were there during the building of it - since they took all dinos off exhibit at that time.
Art Institute now that my girls are grown we enjoy it more. We have quite a few little museums that spotlight life in Chicago during the fur trade. Those are fun-quick visits.
We went to the Chicago History museum over the summer. I'd like to go back and spend more time there.

All of the Smithsonians are favorites for me. ( Museum of Natural History and the Holocaust Museum are my top picks!)
DD went to DC in August and she visited all of them…and loved the new National Museum of african American History and Culture… She said that was beyond beautiful and HUGE!!

The Gettysburg visitors center is well done and I love the cyclorama. There used to be another museum in Gettysburg, it was free and had all kinds of history. I can't remember what it was/is called though (I'm honestly not sure if they are still open). I enjoyed the air and space smithsosian museum. I hear great things about Port Discovery (at least for kids) and the national clock musuem
