A REALLY old one! Seriously, our favorite waffle iron used to be my Grandma's a long time ago! It has removable cast iron plates inside. Beyond that, no advice. We've had I think 3 different ones since we've been married - not because they've worn out but because either we were given another or found one we liked better. It wasn't until we ended up with my Grandma's that we found exactly what we had been wanting all along.

You want one with removable plates that you can stick in the dishwasher.

I have a GE that was a gift. Works just fine. Just wish it had removable plates. clean up is a bit of a pain - getting into all the grooves.

Removable plates but I'd suggest more than 1 for your crew. I like ours (even without removable plates) but we never use it because 1 waffle at a time just takes forever to get everybody fed.

I am of a differing opinion. I had a waffle maker with removable plates, and I did not like it at all.
The one we have now is one that you put the batter in, close the lid, and flip it upside down. As long as I keep it greased, I don't have one bit of problem with waffles sticking or clean up like I did prior. To grease it, I just put a little vegetable oil on a paper towel, and dab it down in the rows. I don't even need to do this but every once in a while. Clean up is a breeze. Also, I use Aldi's pancake mix to make waffles. Yum!
With my old waffle maker with removable plates, the waffles stuck making clean up a nightmare.

My waffle recipes and mixes all seem to have a lot of oil or butter in them, so I've never had any sticking issues with waffle makers. I don't even spray it first.
The double-sided ones are so convenient. We got one of those that was on clearance at Costco, maybe a year ago. Worth the time saving.
One thing I thought I'd mention -- if y'all like fluffier waffles rather than denser waffles, I wouldn't recommend the Farberware 4 slice one. We got that last time and ended up not using it b/c the waffles didn't taste the same when they were so dense. (I think the little pockets aren't as high so there's less air in them.)
Mine is called "Waring Pro Professional Double Waffle Maker."
