Some of you have dealt with this.
I saw my 1st case of black mold today .... in my classroom!
I was not pleased, to say the least.
My classroom is not in the location that it used to be in, when I attended this school.
It was moved to the "auto shop" some years back when auto was discontinued in the schools here.
The space was remodeled beautifully to accommodate cooking & sewing areas. Huge rooms.
Each teacher has a room with a resource room between (this contains our supplies, refrigerator, washer/dryer, etc).
When I started, the Principal promised a freshly painted room for me.
He delivered ... no disappointment there.
Well, yesterday, students & I distributed textbooks.
I didn't notice it then .... but today .... walking by (where we took the books from) .... you've got to be kidding. BLACK MOLD SPOTS. Yikes.
It was GROSS.
Not just wet paper mold spots distributed over an area, but several large spots of the nasty, toxic solid shiny black mold.
It stopped me in my tracks.
I wanted to cry. Stuff like that can really get me feeling OCD.
FORTUNATELY I had a mtg. with the Principal in my classroom just after I noticed this problem.
I showed it to him & he jumped right to action!!! Yay.
Within 15 min. we had building maintenance in there & within an hour or so we had a couple other people from the corporation in there.
I was impressed.
A couple of the guys told me they would probably "clean it" & paint over.
I can't tell them what to do ... though I did voice my concern that was not the correct way to remedy a mold problem.
Heating & Air came in to check for leaks. They are thinking it may be a leaking roof.
We had a TON of rain about 4-5 weeks ago.
When I left today, I was hopeful that they would begin tearing out that drywall (they have to remove some cabinets).
Not a huge area .... maybe 2 sheets of drywall.
I'll sure be glad when this is taken care of.
Every time I think of it I feel anxious.
SO, FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE DEALT WITH THIS ....
is it just enough to fix the water (source) problem, remove & re-install drywall & paint?
I hope they won't clean & paint over as I know that is not the proper way of dealing with mold.
What about the air quality?
Tomorrow you can bet I'm going to have the outside windows OPEN & I'm going to have our outside door OPEN as much as I can ...
just to get fresh air flowing into our rooms. Then I'll have to deal with field mice coming in. Bummer, but I don't want to be getting sick from poor quality indoor air.
What else can I do?
How would I know if mold were to make me sick?
Funny, I had a weird taste in my mouth but that happens when I feel anxious too, so I'm not going to worry myself sick over that.
I did have a headache today.
Feeling really tired, but was tired last night too. Chalking it up to starting my new job.
I'm drinking A LOT of water today ... trying to help my fatigue.
I keep telling myself that lots of people have dealt with this & that everything will be ok.
Can you help to reassure me, too?
I do feel very uneasy. I just hate this.
Why does it have to be so difficult?
Satan absolutely knows how to upset me.
I was aware of that when I discovered this;
therefore, I plowed right thru & told myself not to feel discouraged but to face it head on with my head held high.
I just don't want to drag mold spores into my home with me.
I don't want to be messing with text books that have been exposed to mold.
That entire resource room would be exposed. We usually keep the doors closed.
Nothing else has mold on it that I can see .... although I did notice last week that a book had mold on it.
I remember thinking .... hmmm, why would that be?
Little did I know that when we moved the text books, there would be mold behind them on the wall.
I can't throw those textbooks out.
What do I do? Set them in the sun?
They aren't water damaged or anything.
But I've read horror stories before of things being exposed to mold areas & being contaminated.
I can't afford to have that kind of OCD .... it'll drive me insane.
I just need some good information .... can you help?
Thanks!
