My SIL and nieces were here yesterday for awhile. Since they live about 4 hours away, any time we get to see them is great.
The 4 kids (their 2 and our 2) get along great. But I realized something kind of sad on this visit. Oldest niece is now 5 1/2 - youngest is 2. They all play together still, but it used to be that their oldest and DS kind of hung out together more, especially in the last 1-2 years - their maturity levels were just closer during that time. Now oldest niece is really closer to our DD - makes sense since DD is only a year younger and DS is 2 years older.
Its a natural progression - ages, genders, etc. Our nieces definitely have more "girl" interests (not DS's thing) than does my own DD - but the personalities of the 3 girls are also very similar. They are still all friends and all have fun together - and of course youngest niece is still much younger. I believe they will always be friends. But change over time makes sense. And it also makes me sad.
DS was supposed to have a same-age boy cousin to grow up with - that was our nephew. Hard to believe that was 3 years ago now...It was just kind of a stab of grief to realize that as cousin relationships take their course (at least during childhood), DS will end up being a bit of the odd one out, simply because he is older and his interests are diverging from his younger girl companions. It wasn't supposed to be like that. He was supposed to grow up with one his own age, who's interests would probably more closely have followed his own...He wasn't even ever supposed to be the "oldest" of them - nephew was actually 3 months older. But now DS is the both the oldest by 2 years and the only boy. He doesn't know any different (I think he has memories of his cousin but all were younger then.) But I know its different than it should have been. That hurts all over again...
