There are 4 of us and 2 cars. Fortunately, we live close to the school - about 3 minutes in the car.
Our schedules are as follows:
Dh - school by 7:00 a.m. and stays to an indefinite time in the evening (although we try to eat around 5:30 if nobody has a game)
Me- school by 8:40, classes until 11 and then I usually have to stay to get some things done about 3x a week until 12-12:30
Ds1 - school 3x/week from 9 to 2. He usually drops me off in the morning and then goes right on to school. He also has a job from 3-5:30 working in the daycare at the school Monday to Friday.
Ds2- has school every day, but is also involved in all 3 sports (soccer, basketball, baseball), band, choir, drama and all his art stuff. (btw, he won a chalk art contest downtown this weekend and this was his first chalk drawing)
Right now, it is working for Brock to drop me off at school and then go on to college, and then when I get done, I take dh's car. This gets a bit trickier when we have games because dh leaves work earlier and often announces for the games.
Today, Brock doesn't have class so I was thinking I could have my car, but he agreed he'd go in to help the 3rd grade teacher at school. Meanwhile, I have a hair appointment at 1:30. Basically, my day is now going to look like this:
Drop off at 8:30
Brock comes into school at 11
I take the car at 11 and go home
Brock will walk home from the school at 1
I will leave for my hair appt. at around the same time
I'll get back and take Brock to the school for work and pick up Brody
I'll drive back to the school at around 4:15 to drop Brody off for his game - I may pick up Bruce at the same time.
He'll go back into school at 4:30 and I will either have to go in with him or we'll need to take both cars home at 4:15
I put my schedule up on this big white board. I put everyone else's schedule up too that I know about. I never know exactly what dh is doing as his job is so changeable all the time. You never know when some crisis is going to crop up. Brody is pretty busy with all of his school stuff, but he's at school for a specific amount of time and I have a good idea about things like practice and games.
Brock, on the other hand, makes plans to do things and never checks anyone else's schedule. It's mostly helping people who ask. But, he does not have a car and doesn't want to buy one, but he seems to expect to have mine any time he wants. I feel like we are constantly running around, dropping off cars or people or whatever. It's driving me nuts! I like to try to plan out my weeks so I can get everything done that I need to, but I constantly feel like I have a plan for the day and nope - now I need to run around dropping people off.
A truck has become available for a reasonable amount. We can't buy Brock a vehicle, but do you think it's fair for me to make him buy his own car? What kind of expenses do you make your college kids that live at home responsible for? We need to come up with a plan about the car because, who knows what schedule he'll have next semester. I know it is a transition for all of us. I went from having my day during school hours pretty much to myself and I could count on that, to who the heck knows what's going on each day!
