So, I made a bit more than I normally do last year because I had a couple editing clients and a new publication had me do 2 articles. That little bit of money (we're talking about $2,000), pushed us from one income bracket into the next one which means Brock doesn't get any financial aid at all. I remember in college, my roommate paid her parents "rent" her senior year so she could claim to be independent and all her financial aid was based on her income, not theirs. Is there a way to do that? We really can't help Brock a lot, and we already can't claim him on our taxes anymore. Does anyone know what the criteria is so a young adult could claim to be independent? I obviously am not interested in doing anything underhanded or illegal or even shady. I just wondered if there was a legit way to do that and if so, how you did it.

Curious why you can't claim him on your taxes?
