We are having a family meal at my house in a few weeks. I have a small plastic baby pool behind the garage ---and decided to get it out, clean it up, and fill it with plastic balls for a play area while the adults all eat dinner. Having 2 grandkids under the age of 2 is so much fun - yet they do not like to sit still while the rest of us eat. Hopefully this will turn out to be a good idea I am also planning for a 1 yr old birthday party in June. I saw this on pinterest....get 3 matching baby pools (i have one)...fill one with water, one with balls, one with sand (or I might do a bag of dirt)...and add a few tonka type trucks. Sit the pools out in the yard - maybe have a shade canopy, and let the kiddos play all day , while the adults sit about in camp chairs. I am hosting the 1st bday party, but the mom is planning the menu, cake, etc.

Sounds so fun and exciting!!! Kids have so much fun in a ball pit!!! ( I never liked the "public" ones, like at Chuck E Cheese -type places, but ones that just are for family and friends is great!!!!!! Have fun planning and enjoying your little ones!!

Fun! We have used a kid pool (started with baby-sized but now a larger one) for a sand box for the last 4 years. The kids still use it at age 6 1/2 and 4. If you want to keep sand/dirt in the pool long-term though, poke holes in the bottom to let water drain out (I just used a hand-held drill.) Then again, keeping it covered would probably be even better since yours would not be in use daily.

Thanks for the advice. I hadn't thought about drainage holes.
Since I would have the dirt / sand at the farm, my plan was to just dump it down the hill into the woods when we were finished.
Too many raccoons and other critters to try and save

I have to say - I have gotten alot of milage out of the baby pool and the balls. First - I had balls in pool (no water) in sunroom.....babies had a blast When it got hot , I filled up with water on the patio...with balls......more of a blast. These little balls...are light weight...and just "blow" away.....we started w/ 200 balls....between the ones that deflated...I bet I am down to about 60 or so. They are under the bushes, in the closets, under the couch, just about everywhere you look., there will be a little ball.... I know my ds's would die of embarrassment - but I put on my suit and sit in the baby pool w/ the kids. ! It's too hot to just sit and watch
