What do you or your child feel are *must haves* for dorm living?
My dd wants a Keurig coffee maker. We're going to wait and see about a microwave/fridge when roommates are decided. What else? (My family wants to start buying her things)

I didn't have too many must haves. The easy things to get out of the way would be towels & some dishes. A coffee maker of some kind would be nice. I brought our microwave and my roommate brought our fridge.

My "must have" in college my pets. I wasn't going anywhere my cats couldn't go. Part of the reason I chose community college first so I could transfer and never have to live in a dorm (where I could not have my pets). Ok, it wasn't the whole or even main reason - but it was part of it. My pets really were a "must have" for me. LOL!

Yes to the Kuerig. Yes to the microwave oven. Yes to the dorm fridge.
When DD#1 went to college, because she was in varsity sports, she got her own room (which she grew to LOVE but hated @ first).
When DD#2 went to college, I'm pretty sure that we sent her with a dorm fridge & a coffee maker. She later bought a microwave.
Now I will tell you ... snack food is a must because vending machines are really expensive. Meal plans are really expensive, too. DD#1 needed breakfast because she had her practices early in the morning (so for breakfast she was starving), but DD#2, she opted for less meals per week & usually ate breakfast in her room. She had instant oatmeal, granola bars, yogurt, peanut butter, etc.
I do not recall that the girls had toasters because I think those were banned.
I have a funny: my girls are SO FRUGAL (now that they are paying an electric bill) that their dorm fridges are HERE. One sat in the garage for quite a while, but the other we have in the basement & I keep water/pop/beer, etc. it in.
When Christmas came around this year, I brought in the other dorm fridge from the garage, and I have other drinks & small stuff in there in my kitchen! I'm not going to want to give these little convenient fridges up. LOL I was really surprised ... thought the girls would want them for small things but NOPE, "drives up the electric bill," they say. ha! I don't even notice. I figure the electric went down (from the washer/dryer/water/computer, etc) when they moved out ... so I don't notice what it costs to run those little fridges. I don't think it's much.

p.s.
Bought the first dorm fridge @ Target for about $100. It's not the small square, but a taller fridge with a little freezer in it.
Same with the other, but this came to us 2nd hand, for $35 (a steal). Notre Dame offers summer programs & a kid had come for the program (like 6 weeks or so). After he was finished, the fridge went up for sale. He wanted $70. Fine. I made the arrangement to go and pick it up. I got there ... and the fridge was already down in the storage area (they had to be out by a certain date). I don't recall how long the fridge sat down there .... maybe a few days. Because it was unplugged and because he had left food IN THERE .... well, it didn't really smell but it was a little messy. Not bad, but I was NOT HAPPY. I said .... I'll give you "half," take it or leave it. He took it.
I think these things are a dime a dozen on Facebook selling pages, or craigslist.

Keurigs are great because there are meal options with them now... Oatmeal, soups etc...
