My oldest (almost 11, 5th grade) got a concussion playing football back in August. We went through the protocol, and he was cleared several weeks later to return to play. In the meantime, we had to make the decision to pull him out of school and homeschool for this year because the headaches were keeping him from advancing with his class. He could barely make it through half a day of school. We have him nearly caught up to where his class was at the end of this quarter, but he will not be returning until possibly the fall for middle school.
The headaches had stopped, but in the past few weeks, they have become quite frequent again. Generally complains toward the end of the day. He has been out of sports completely for 6-7 weeks, and only doing normal outdoor activity since. No full contact like football, though he does wrestle around with his brothers quite a bit. Added to it, his anxiety levels can be sky high. I have read that is a symptom of concussion issues. We are able to help that with essential oil use, and he really is quite calm on the days I use them. Trying to be consistent about that. We will be getting a mental/behavioral health evaluation after the new year, as the anxiety was always there in the past, just at a much more manageable level. He has actually asked to see a therapist for it. He said he always thought he could handle it, but is realizing after speaking with my niece (she has severe anxiety issues) that he needs to nip this now. I'm thankful. I suffer from anxiety myself, and really hate seeing him suffer like I do. The oils have been wonderful for both of us.
Anyhow, all that to ask what your experiences may be with a child who has had a concussion. He will not be participating in any contact sports for awhile. Tackle league doesn't start back until late July, and he will only register for that again if fully cleared by a doctor. In the meantime, he will be playing basketball (Upward league, much more low key than the county rec league).
