Hi there! I'm Amanda. I live in Tallahassee, Florida. I have three kids - girls who are 6 and 3, and a boy who's about to turn 1. I used to be a classroom teacher in a Christian school (middle & high school social studies and mathematics), and now I'm homeschooling. Um...I like to read, quilt, quill, tell funny stories about my kids, and watch some geeky shows. If you have more questions about me, you can ask, and I will answer, or at least make up something funny.

Hi, Amanda! Welcome! I love your username! My 18 yo DD loves owls and we both love purple. I can already tell you have a great sense of humor. It'll be fun getting to know you.

When she was 3 (I think), my oldest decided to assign favorite colors and favorite animals to each member of our family. My assignments were purple and owls, so when I needed a new username at some point, I went with purpleowl!

How very creative of your DD, especially for a 3-year-old! Does the green frog in your avatar picture represent another member of your family?

Yep, that's my middle one. DD#1 assigned her green and frog. DD#1's is pink/flamingos, DH's is blue/alligators, and DS's is light blue/whales. I have made it abundantly clear to DD#1 that her siblings do have the right to change what their favorites are if they want to! So far, DD#2 is cool with green & frogs, though. I am slowly working on quilled versions of everybody's animal, and the picture of the quilled froggy makes me smile, so I made it my avatar.

Hi guys! Quilling is a paper craft. You take long thin strips of paper, curl them up, then shape and glue them to make...whatever you want. My avatar is a quilled frog. If you do a google image search for paper quilling, you will find tons of beautiful work. It's very easy to get started with - I learned as a child - but you can also learn more advanced techniques, and the things you can make are limited only by your creativity!

This sounds like a new thing to add to our arts curriculum. It sounds like fun, and the end result is so pretty!

Welcome, Amanda. My mom has this really old Christmas ornament that has quilling on it. It always has to go WAY up at the top of the tree where little fingers can't reach it!

Oh, THAT'S what that is called! Very cool!!!!!! Years ago my DD had received a craft book/set with similar paper, patterns, etc… but it was very simplistic in comparison to your frog, but really neat, nonetheless.. Now I know the technical term!!!!!

Love the frog - so cute! I'm afraid I'd be quite limited by my creativity - I don't have much when it comes to artsy stuff.
