I am seriously considering a trip next year to either Central America or Africa and I'd love to hear about other's experiences.

I went to China when I was in college. I taught English and did some outreach-type ministries. It was eye-opening and entirely life-changing; it's been 15 years and I still find myself learning lessons that God started teaching me on that trip.
I would love to go on another one someday-- maybe when my kids are a bit older and could go with and actually be helpful. Our church supports a missionary couple who teach at a seminary in Peru, and I know they'd love my husband to come down one of these years. I would absolutely like to tag along with him.

I have been to Haiti and Honduras. Both were prekids. I went with my dad to Haiti and then I went for a semester in school to Honduras and taught there and lived with dh's parents before we were married.

Oh, look at that...the poll thing is neat. I touched it and it voted, so I messed up your poll, lol. Sorry! I "voted" 'domestic', but I can't think of a time when I've been away for something that was specifically for missions purposes. My kids have done some. That sounds exciting for you. What group would you be going with?

I, personally, like stateside missions, and this is what dh & I prefer to support. We like to participate in small missions opportunities, and our daughter did missions in Appalachia that was not only eye opening for her, but helpful to the people she ministered to & helped out with practical things. She also participated in a European opportunity. Loved it, wouldn't change a thing, but it was very expensive.
I am more for foreign missions when it involves a lengthier span of time than a week or two, unless it is medical/dental missions. Our church sends a group to Haiti every year or two, and I was going to go also one year but decided against it. The $$ that we raise & donate to the cause is enormous because of travel expense, not to mention the cost to the organization that provides for the opportunity. In our case we had a lady in our church as the organizer (she used to live there) so there wasn't the organizational cost, but often there is.
One of dd's best friends spent a summer in Africa with Teen Mission, after her sophomore year of high school, and her sister just came off the Mercy Ship (as a nurse) shortly before the big Ebola outbreak.

Yes. I went to England in college, and it was a life changer.
I know LOTS of missionaries here in Panama who would welcome you and a group from your church or family or Hearts sisters!

It would only let me vote once, but I have been on mission trips both domestic and internationally. Both are eye opening and life changing. I would highly recommend spending PLENTY of time in prayer to examine the real reasons why you want to go. I have struggled with that for the past few years I have went.
